40 Years of Planning by 6 Tampa Mayors Equals “Game Changer” for Tampa’s Urban Experience: The Riverwalk
Tampa’s Riverwalk is probably the single coolest outdoor attraction that can be found downtown (map). Once completed, the pedestrian-friendly trail will span over two uninterrupted miles of waterfront along the eastern side of the Hillsborough River. It connects the Channelside District to the Arts District and includes many popular sites along the way, such as: Water Works Park, Curtis Hixon Park, MacDill Park, Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, the History Center, the Straz Center, the Tampa Museum of Art, Glazer Children’s Museum, Rivergate Tower and adjacent atrium containing the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. Because of this, the Riverwalk can accurately be described as dynamic, cultural, family oriented, and vibrant.
Not only does Tampa’s Riverwalk attract families, joggers, cyclists, and art enthusiasts, it’s also attracting business. At the groundbreaking for the final phase known as the Kennedy Segment, Mayor Bob Buckhorn who spearheaded the funding of this phase had this to say: “This is a game changer…we will not recognize this downtown in 10 years.” He speculated further that the Riverwalk would not be the end but the center of Tampa’s urban experience in the coming years.
For many young professionals moving back to the urban core factors like walkability and livability are extremely high on their list of must-haves for their newly constructed homes in Tampa Bay.
“Young people they come at night and want to come downtown,” said former mayor Pam Iorio, “What do you want to do after you’ve eaten? You want to take a walk along the river, right? This is the kind of thing that makes for a great downtown.”
