West Tampa Community Steps Up after Little League Break In
For decades the West Tampa Little League has been an integral part of this family-oriented community located north of Kennedy Blvd and west of the Hillsborough River. They provide a safe, fun environment for youngsters and their families to make lasting memories and learn valuable life lessons. What’s more is that league organizers make it possible for underprivileged youth to play, thanks to some generous sponsors and concession sales.
Shockingly the league’s concession stand was targeted by thieves twice in the last three months. The most recent burglary left the league $3,000 in the hole. Thieves made off with candy, sodas, and a cash register. They even took the league’s surveillance recording device.
When Katie Roman, West Tampa Little League’s treasurer, reached out to News Channel 8, she had no idea the kind of support the community would provide to restock the shelves and beef up the security. News Channel 8 – WFLA ran the story during the nightly news, and Roman’s phone started ringing. Calls came in from individuals and companies alike offering assistance. She was truly grateful to News Channel 8 for their help to get the word out. She made a big deal about the fact that it’s all about the kids. She asked, “Who does that? Who would steal from children?”
Domain Homes, which is building six new homes in West Tampa right across the street from the ball fields, stepped up to the plate for the opportunity to be a good neighbor. Vice President Jim McCarthy and Chief Operating Officer jumped right into action when they saw the news. Within minutes, a check was written to the West Tampa Little League. Vice President Tim Terpening got to deliver the good news and the money to Roman. It was an emotionally uplifting moment. A local church and other members of the community stepped up to make sure that the league recovered everything they lost and then some.
We knew this was a great community already, but this has really confirmed that in a big way. We are proud to be a part of the West Tampa community.
